“Parts of a Plant” Informational Life Science Bundle

Lesson Plan Description

Engaging for all readers, especially multilingual students learning English, this bundle of lessons is based on Life Science standards and a text, “The Parts of a Plant,” by Jennifer Kaul. Your students will:

  • Segment 1: Use images and details in a text to describe its key ideas, ask and answer questions with sentence frames to determine word meaning
  • Segment 2: Identify the main topic and retell key details of a text and ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
  • Segment 3: students will create and label a diagram that supports an informational text.

First Grade Life Science NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) include: LS1.A: Structure and Function All organisms have external parts. Different animals use their body parts in different ways to see, hear, grasp objects, protect themselves, move from place to place, and seek, find, and take in food, water and air. Plants also have different parts (roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits) that help them survive and grow. (1-LS1-1)

These lessons can be taught over the span of a half day or you can use the lessons independently, broken up over several days.
