4th Grade • 1 Lesson Plan
$2.00

Lesson Plan Description

Our 4th graders need consistent practice working with fractions, mixed numbers and the relationship between addition and subtraction.  This lesson is perfectly designed for your students.  They will:

  • Collaborate with peers to practice the “language” of math and construct viable arguments
  • Decompose a fraction into a sum of fractions with the same denominator in more than one way
  • Rename improper fractions as equivalent mixed numbers and reinforce their understanding by visually by modeling with mathematics
  • Add mixed numbers with like denominators, e.g., by replacing each mixed number with an equivalent fraction, and/or by using properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction
  • Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole and having like denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem
  • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others
  • Complete an exit slip to help you determine next instructional steps
