4th Grade Math Lesson: Number & Operations Fractions

Subject:
Math, Numbers and Operations Fractions

Type:
1 Hour Lesson

CCSS: 4.NF4.3, Standards of Math Practices 3, 4

Skills: addition of fractions, decomposition of fractions, real-world tasks involving addition of like fractions, renaming of improper fractions as equivalent mixed numbers, the construction of viable arguments, ...

Description: In this 60-90 minute lesson plan, students will work with number and operations fractions to understand the addition of fractions as joining parts referring to the same whole. Students will decompose a fraction into a sum of fractions with the same denominator in more than one way as well as will solve real world tasks involving addition of like fractions. Students will rename improper fractions as equivalent mixed numbers and reinforce their learning visually by modeling with mathematics. Working in a group setting and in pairs, students will construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

Numbers & Operations Fractions

4th Grade • 1 Hour Lesson

Subject:
Math, Numbers and Operations Fractions

Type:
1 Hour Lesson

CCSS: NF4.6, Standards of Math Practices 3, 4

Skills: decimal notation for fractions with denominators of 10, modeling with mathematics by representing fractions on a number line, argument construction, and critiquing the reasoning of ...

Description: This 60-90 minute lesson plan teaches numbers and operations fractions to fourth grade students. Working in a group setting and in pairs, students will learn how to use decimal notation for fractions with denominators of 10 or 100, including how to represent a fraction and a decimal greater than 1 as an improper fraction and its equivalent mixed number. For example, students will learn to rewrite 0.62 as 62/100; describe a length as 0.62 meters; locate 0.62 on a number line diagram. By modeling with mathematics and presenting their learning, students will stay engaged as well as utilize crucial skills including the construction of viable arguments and the critique of the reasoning of others.
