Lesson Plan Description

Kindergarten half day of ELA lesson plans containing 3 separate segments (30-45 minutes each) addressing reading and writing comprehension standards. These lessons include a read aloud of a printable Informational Life Science book, Actions that Help and Hurt by Jennifer Kaul. Students will practice identifying parts of a book, unknown words, ask and answer questions about the text, cause and effect, problem solution, and students creating a pledge to the Earth. There is also an real life application activity where students can help pick up litter to help the environment, ask and answer questions about the text, and

  • Segment 1: students will identify the title and author of the book, discuss cause and effect on the topic of people and their relationship with the environment, use context clues to define new vocabulary, match pictures that show cause and effect from the text.
  • Segment 2: students will identify the title and author of the book, discuss cause and effect on the topic of people and their relationship with the environment, use context clues to define new vocabulary, ask and answer questions about the text, identify a problem from the text and draw a picture, and identify a solution to a problem from the book.
  • Segment 3: students will identify the title and author of the book, discuss cause and effect on the topic of people and their relationship with the environment, use context clues to define new vocabulary, ask and answer questions about the text, identify a solution to a problem from the book, and draw a picture and write a sentence about their pledge to the earth.

These lessons can be taught over the span of a half day or you can use the lessons independently, broken up over several days.

**This lesson also addresses Kindergarten Life Science NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards). ESS3.C: Human Impacts on Earth Systems Things that people do to live comfortably can affect the world around them. But they can make choices that reduce their impacts on the land, water, air, and other living things. (secondary to K-ESS2-2),(K-ESS3-3)
