Lesson Plan Description

Third Grade half day of math lesson plans containing 3 separate segments (30-60 minutes each) addressing Measurement and Data: measuring inches, half inches, and quarter inches, collecting data, and creating line plots (3.MD.4). These lessons include: key vocabulary, helpful student notes for reference, guided and independent practice of concepts, measuring items around the classroom, and creating line plots.

  • Segment 1: students will create rulers to use that identify measurement lengths in whole, half, and quarter inches.
  • Segment 2: students will gather and record measurement data using whole, half, and quarter inches.
  • Segment 3: students will make a line plot with a horizontal scale marked off in whole number, half, or quarter units.

These lessons can be taught over the span of a half day or you can use the lessons independently, broken up over several days.
