Lesson Plan Description

This half day lesson plan is broken down into 2 separate segments (60 minutes each) addressing Operations and Algebraic Thinking: Interpreting Quotients (3.OA.A2). These lessons include: key division vocabulary, helpful student notes for reference, guided and independent practice of concepts (division, equal groups, partitive division, quotative division, repeated subtraction and repeated addition) and a game to reinforce the concept of interpreting quotients.

  • Segment 1: students will explain division as a set of objects partitioned into an equal number of shares, identify parts of division equations (dividend, divisor, and quotient), and interpret quotients in division. (32 ÷ 4 = 8 can be 4 groups with 8 items in each group
or 8 groups with 4 items.)
  • Segment 2: students will play a game to reinforce division as a set of objects partitioned into an equal number of shares and interpret quotients in division. (32 ÷ 4 = 8 can be 4 groups with 8 items in each group
or 8 groups with 4 items.)

These lessons can be taught over the span of a half day or you can use the lessons independently, broken up over several days.
