Informational: “Breaker Boys: A Light at the End of the Tunnel”

Lesson Plan Description

This half day of lesson plans is broken down into 4 separate segments (30-60 minutes each) addressing several ELA standards using copies of Informational Text: “Breaker Boys: A Light at the End of the Tunnel” by Jennifer Kaul which is included in the lesson. Your students will use close reading comprehension techniques (RI.4.1-4.5), Synthesizing of Text, Key Details, Vocabulary, Causal Reasoning (Effects), Text Features, & Summarizing.

  • Segment 1: Students will take literal interpretation of informational text to evaluation and synthesizing.
  • Segment 2: Students will complete a graphic organizer to show the effects that the job of the breaker boys had on them personally.
  • Segment 3: Students will create and use three headings to write a summary of the informational text.
    Segment 4:Students will show understanding of the informational text on breaker boys through a crossword puzzle.

These lessons can be taught over the span of a half day or you can use the lessons independently, broken up over several days.
