Materials Needed: blank paper, lined pieces of paper, pencil & crayons/colored pencils and a document camera or whiteboard.
Printable Resources: Required: copies of Informational Text: “Breaker Boys: A Light at the End of the Tunnel” by Jennifer Kaul (1 copy per student) Optional: printable “Exit Slip” –or- blank paper (as an optional assessment component) (1 copy per student), Causal Reasoning Design (Focus on Effects) graphic organizer (1 copy per student), “Breaker Boys- Crossword Puzzle” (1 copy per student) (All optional printable resources can be projected and students can copy them on blank paper.)
Lesson Plan Description
This half day of lesson plans is broken down into 4 separate segments (30-60 minutes each) addressing several ELA standards using copies of Informational Text: “Breaker Boys: A Light at the End of the Tunnel” by Jennifer Kaul which is included in the lesson. Your students will use close reading comprehension techniques (RI.4.1-4.5), Synthesizing of Text, Key Details, Vocabulary, Causal Reasoning (Effects), Text Features, & Summarizing.
- Segment 1: Students will take literal interpretation of informational text to evaluation and synthesizing.
- Segment 2: Students will complete a graphic organizer to show the effects that the job of the breaker boys had on them personally.
- Segment 3: Students will create and use three headings to write a summary of the informational text.
Segment 4:Students will show understanding of the informational text on breaker boys through a crossword puzzle.
These lessons can be taught over the span of a half day or you can use the lessons independently, broken up over several days.
