Lesson Plan Description

Perfect for multilingual students learning English, this series of lessons includes strategic scaffolding with sentence frames for building vocabulary through collaborative conversations.  Using the informational Earth Science text, “Renewable and Nonrenewable Resources: Your Energy Use Explained” your students will:

  • Segment 1: Develop vocabulary and understanding through strategic partner talk in order to practice moving from a literal interpretation of informational text to evaluation and synthesis by asking and answering text dependent questions
  • Segment 2: Practice the skills of  compare and contrast with the topic of renewable and nonrenewable resources
  • Segment 3: Create a new layout for the informational text that incorporates select text features.
  • Practice the skills of  compare and contrast with the topic of renewable and nonrenewable resources
  • Bonus Segment 4: Demonstrate their understanding of the informational text on renewable and nonrenewable resources by creating a crossword puzzle

The text used in these lessons addresses the NGSS: ESS3.A:

  • Natural Resources Energy and fuels that humans use are derived from natural sources, and their use affects the environment in multiple ways. Some resources are renewable over time, and others are not.

These lessons can be taught over the span of a half day or you can use the lessons independently, broken up over several days.
