Engaging for all readers, especially multilingual students learning English, this lesson is based on Life Science standards and a text, “The Parts of a Plant,” by Jennifer Kaul. Your students will:

  • Use images and details in a text to describe its key ideas in collaborative conversations with sentence frames
  • Ask and answer questions to determine word meaning

This lesson addresses the following First Grade Life Science NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards): LS1.A: Structure and Function All organisms have external parts. Different animals use their body parts in different ways to see, hear, grasp objects, protect themselves, move from place to place, and seek, find, and take in food, water and air. Plants also have different parts (roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits) that help them survive and grow. (1-LS1-1)
