Lesson Plan Description

This half day of lesson plans is broken down into 4 separate segments (30-60 minutes each) addressing several ELA standards using the historical poem, “Star Spangled Banner,” by Francis Scott Key and a historical explanation. Your students will use close reading comprehension techniques, create a graphic novel, and write a summary.

  • Segment 1: students will synthesize a poem to discover key details, analyze word/phrase meanings and find the main idea. In addition, they will also write a 3 to 5 sentence summary capturing the main idea of the poem.
  • Segment 2: students will create a book to analyze words, phrases and expressions within a poem.
  • Segment 3: students will continue their book to identify author’s craft and key details in the text.
  • Segment 4: students will finish their book by identifying author’s craft and organization of text.

These lessons can be taught over the span of a half day or you can use the lessons independently, broken up over several days.
