Materials Needed: blank paper and construction paper or plain 8 1/2” x 11” paper, pencils and crayons/colored pencils, counters or little blocks, glue sticks or glue, scissors, timer – if available, document camera or whiteboard and Optional: individual whiteboards and dry erase markers
Printable Resources: Optional: “Exit Slips” (1 copy per student); Required: “Addition Word Problems” (1 copy per student) (1 for display); Required: “Ice Cream Bowl Craft” (3 pages per student) (1 copy for demonstration) (Make a few extra copies of page 2 (ice cream scoops) in case students need more scoops.)
Lesson Plan Description
Kindergarten half day of math lesson plans containing 3 separate segments (45-60 minutes each) addressing addition word problems within 10 (K.OA.2). These lessons include: solving addition word problems through acting out the problem, creating drawings to represent the problem, using objects, and finishes with an ice cream sundae craft where students will create their own word problem including a number sentence to match.
- Segment 1: Students will solve addition word problems by acting out the problems and representing the problems with drawings.
- Segment 2: Students will solve word problems by using objects. They will also learn how to fill in a number sentence to match a word problem.
- Segment 3: Students will solve addition word problems through drawings. They will also create an addition word problem of their own and create a craft to represent that word problem.
These lessons can be taught over the span of a half day or you can use the lessons independently, broken up over several days.
