Lesson Plan Description

This lesson is perfect as an introduction or review of adding and subtracting mixed numbers in word problems.  Your 5th graders will take strategic notes, practice solving problems in pairs or teams and explaining the “why” of their mental math estimation.  They will:

  • Collaborate with peers to practice the “language” of fractions in strategic and purposeful partnerships 
  • Take notes using visual area models, estimation and reasonableness in order to solve addition and subtraction fraction word problems including cases with unlike denominators
