Students who arrive in school speaking a language other than English, bring many skills and abilities to your classroom, they just can’t express their ideas in English. This can often result in frustration and anxiety.
Overcoming these challenges faced by students learning English as a second language can be facilitated by using strategic lessons that involve pictures. You don’t need to know how to read English to understand a picture. Teachers of ELL students understand and know that pictures, gestures, chants, and the use of “realia” can help lower the affective filter for English Language Learners and allow them to actively participate in their acquisition of English.
