Lesson Plan Description
Whew! We know that 5th graders need a lot of practice explaining how they solved a long division problem. It is in the explanation that we can “see” what they truly understand about place value. In this lesson your students will:
- Collaborate with peers to practice the “language” of math in strategic and purposeful partnerships and take “math” notes
- Practice finding whole-number quotients of whole numbers with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors
- Use strategies based on mental models, equations, rectangular arrays, properties of operations, and/or area models to solve problems
- Demonstrate what they understand of long division using the standard algorithm
- Complete an “exit ticket” to help drive your next instructional steps
