## Lesson Plan Description

This fully scripted First Grade half day lesson plan is broken down into 2 separate segments (45-60 minutes each). These segments address Geometry: Partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, fourths, and quarters, and use the phrases half of, fourth of, and quarter of. They also have the students describe the whole as two of, or four of the shares. Understand for these examples that decomposing into more equal shares creates smaller shares. (1.G.3). These lessons include: an overview of basic fraction vocabulary, whole group practice sharing things equally/creating equal shares, practice drawing lines to “cut” an object in half, coloring half of an object, identifying objects that are equally split in half, an exit slip as an optional assessment component, and a pizza craft to help students create a visual model of equal halves.

**Segment 1:**Students will understand a fraction means to split a whole into equal parts, identify which wholes are equally split in half, draw lines to divide shapes in half, shade ½ of an object. Students will also use the words/phrases “whole,” “half,” and “half of.”**Segment 2:**Students will draw lines to divide shapes in half. Students will use the words/phrases “whole,” “half,” and “half of.

These lessons can be taught over the span of a half day or you can use the lessons independently, broken up over several days.
