Lesson Plan Description

Fully-scripted bundle of 3 lessons (45-60 minutes each) based on an informational text “Pushes and Pulls: Speeding Up and Slowing Down” by Jennifer Kaul.  Students will:

  • Segment 1: Identify the title and author of the book, use context clues to define new vocabulary, ask and answer questions about the text, investigate how objects move and stop, identify activities as a push or a pull, define push and pull, and brainstorm push and pull activities in a web diagram.
  • Segment 2: Use context clues to define new vocabulary, ask and answer questions about the text, investigate how pushes and pulls speed up and slow down, discuss cause and effect on the topic of push and pull, explore and understand how a push and pull affects how objects move, share and discuss observations, sort pushes and pulls in a Venn Diagram, define push and pull.
  • Segment 3: Ask and answer questions about the text, use context clues to define new vocabulary, define push and pull, follow the scientific method by forming a question, hypothesis, investigating, observing, and drawing a conclusion about pushes and pulls, investigate how pushes and pulls speed up and slow down, investigate how objects move and stop, discuss cause and effect on the topic of push and pull, explore and understand how a push and pull affects how objects move, share and discuss observations.

This lesson addresses NGSS PS3.C: Relationship Between Energy and Forces A bigger push or pull makes things speed up or slow down more quickly. (secondary to K-PS2-1)
