Lesson Plan Description

Review, practice, apply and fun with concept of volume and rectangular prisms. Determining volume with “flat” pictures can be challenging and frustrating. Your students will have multiple opportunities to apply their knowledge with this bundle of lessons. They will:

Segment 1: collaborate and use the “language” of volume in strategic, purposeful note-taking partnerships in order to identify the elements of a right rectangular prism: edge, base, face, vertex & apply their multiplication and addition skills to find the volume of a right rectangular prism with whole-number edge lengths
Segment 2: practice using the formula V = l x w x h to find the volume of right rectangular prisms in the context of real life application of mathematical problems
Segment 3: determine the elements of a right rectangular prism: vertex, edge, base, face and apply their multiplication and addition skills to find the volume of a right rectangular prism with whole-number edge lengths by creating a house and finding the volume as well as completing an exit slip to help determine your next instructional steps

These lessons can be taught over the span of a half day or you can use the lessons independently, broken up over several days.
