Subject: Math, Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Type: 1 Lesson Plan
Skills: Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract.2 Examples: If 8 + 3 = 11 is known, then 3 + 8 = 11 is also known. (Commutative property of addition.)
Materials Needed: blank paper, pencil & crayons/colored pencils, construction paper at least 8 ½" by 11" (1 per student), scissors and glue sticks, dice (1 per student), and a document camera or whiteboard

Lesson Plan Description
First Grade 1-Hour math lesson addressing Operations and Algebraic Thinking: addition using the commutative property (1.OA.3). This lesson is best suited for students who have had previous exposure to the commutative property or using “flip-flop” facts. Students will participate in using a number bond mat to visually represent addition facts using counters. They will then create a commutative property craft displaying “flip-flop” facts on a flip-flop sandal.
Students will show the commutative property or “flip-flop facts” through objects and numbers, use number bonds to show the commutative property, create a craft to show number bonds and the commutative property or “flip-flop fact,” and use the words addends and sum when describing the commutative property.
**Purchasing both this 1 hour and the Math Bundle: Addition using the Commutative Property Bundle,” will result in duplicated content.
