• Participate in an interactive read aloud with a geometric math focus
• Collaborate with peers and practice the "language" of mathematics
• Take "notes" in an interactive math journal
• Distinguish between defining and non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size) of two-dimensional shapes
• Build and draw shapes with defining attributes to create composite shapes

Description: Teaching math through engaging literary books is the way to go!  In this 1 hour fully scripted math lesson using Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes as a "hook" to learning geometry, your students will:

• Work in pairs to practice the language of math by identifying attributes of 2 dimensional shapes and  key geometry vocabulary
• Practice taking notes for math learning in order to understand defining and non-defining attributes
• Distinguish between defining (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size)
• Create a t-chart and sort/draw objects by attribute.
