Description: Do your 4th graders need more practice multiplying fractions and explaining their reasoning?  In this lightly scripted, interactive 1 hour lesson they will: This 60-minute, fourth grade lesson plan teaches the concept of multiplying fractions by whole numbers. Students are asked to represent their solutions using fraction models. This lesson explicitly teaches standard concepts through whole class activities, creative partner practice games using dice/playing cards, and independent assessments.

  • Make comments that contribute to the discussion and link to the remarks of others
• Model with fractions by applying and extending previous understanding of multiplication to multiply a fraction by a whole number

• Demonstrate their understanding by playing games with dice or playing cards
• Complete an exit slip to help you determine next instructional steps

Description: 3rd grade math standards can be very "heavy" with multiple skills embedded in "1" standard.  This engaging, lightly scripted 1 hour lesson provides multiple opportunities for your students to practice the concept of solving for area.  They will:

• Work in collaborative partnerships
• Practice key math vocabulary
• Attend to precision, ask and answer questions
• Participate in an introduction to the concepts of area
• Solve for area using square units of measurement
• Complete exit slips to provide instructional next steps
