Lesson Plan Description

Help your students practice the skill of rounding numbers (an invaluable mental math life skill…think shopping for the best price ?) with this bundle of lessons.  Your students will:

  • Segment 1: practice the “language” of place value and rounding 3 digit numbers to the nearest 10’s in collaboration with peers by using a vertical number line and taking notes
  • Segment 2: build on the practice in Segment 1 by rounding 3 digit whole numbers to the nearest 100 on a vertical number line
  • Segment 3: demonstrate their understanding of rounding by playing a card game in pairs or small groups the displays their understanding of this important mental math strategy

These lessons can be taught over the span of a half day or you can use the lessons independently, broken up over several days.
