Lesson Plan Description
This 1 hour lesson plan addresses several ELA standards using the historical poem, “Star Spangled Banner,” by Francis Scott Key. Your students will use close reading comprehension techniques and will participate in repeated readings of the same text, each time with a different focus in mind. They will work both independently and with a partner to analyze and better understand the text. Students will synthesize a poem to discover key details, analyze word/phrase meanings and find the main idea. They will also write a 3 to 5 sentence summary of the poem capturing the main idea.
