Lesson Plan Description
This bundle lesson plan is broken down into 3 separate segments (30-60 minutes each) addressing Numbers in Base-Ten: Rounding Decimals (5.NBT.4). These lessons include: key place value and rounding vocabulary, helpful student notes for reference, guided and independent practice of concepts, and a BINGO game to reinforce the concept of rounding decimals.
- Segment 1: collaborate with peers to practice the “language” of fractions in strategic and purposeful partnerships and take notes in order to practice rounding a decimal number to the nearest whole number (ones place), tenth, and hundredth (1/10, 1/100) by using a horizontal number line and place value understanding
- Segment 2: practice explaining the “why” of decimals by continuing to round decimal numbers to the nearest whole number, tenth, hundredth, and thousandth places (1/10, 1/100, 1/1000) with real-life word problems and “money”
- Segment 3: demonstrate their understanding of this skill (rounding to the nearest whole number, tenth, hundredth, and thousandth (ones, 1/10, 1/100, and 1/1000) place) by playing a game of Bingo
These lessons can be taught over the span of a half day or you can use the lessons independently, broken up over several days.
