Description: 5th graders can benefit from multiple opportunities to practice adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers...particularly with unlike denominators!  In this interactive, scripted bundle of 3 lessons  (30-60 minutes each) your students will:

• Collaborate and use the "language" of place value and decimals in strategic, purposeful note-taking partnerships
• Use both a bar model and multiplication in order to practice adding, subtracting, reducing and simplifying basic fractions with unlike denominators
• Solve more complex problems using mixed numbers with unlike denominators using bar models and multiplication
• Demonstrate their understanding of these critical concepts by playing a game requiring them to add/subtract fractions with unlike denominators and then compare the sums or differences
• Complete an exit slip to help determine your next instructional steps

Description: Understanding fractional parts of a mixed numbers can be confusing and complicated for students.  In this engaging, scripted 1 hour lesson your 5th graders will:

• Collaborate and use the "language" of place value and decimals in strategic, purposeful note-taking partnerships
• Use both a bar model and multiplication in order to practice adding, subtracting, reducing and simplifying basic fractions with unlike denominators
• Complete an exit slip to help determine your next instructional steps

This 1 hour math lesson addresses Numbers and Operations- Fractions: adding and subtracting fractions unlike denominators. Students will learn key fraction vocabulary, take helpful notes for reference, and complete independent/partner practice of concepts. Students will add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators using both a bar model and multiplication.
