Description: Have fun with your 3rd graders and reinforce the mathematical concepts of measuring, estimating and solving for mass and volume.  This lightly scripted and engaging lesson provides multiple opportunities for your students to engage in the language of measurement and practice solving word problems.  They will:

  • Attention to precision
  • Work in collaborative partnerships
  • Speak in complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation in order to provide requested detail or clarification
  • Measure and estimate liquid volumes and masses of objects using standard units of grams (g), kilograms (kg), and liters (l)
  • Add, subtract, multiply or divide to solve one-step word problems involving masses or volumes using drawings (such as a beaker with a measurement scale) to represent the problem
  • Complete exit slips to provide instructional next steps
