Lesson Plan Description

Practice the invaluable skill and vocabulary of number sense (place value) in different ways with these 3 engaging lessons.  Perfect for review and or introduction, your students will have multiple opportunities to work with partners and explain the “why” of number values.  Your students will:

  • Segment 1: collaborate, practice using key vocabulary, take strategic notes, write numbers in expanded form through the hundred-thousands place, and use expanded form to explain place value through the hundred-thousands place
  • Segment 2: continue to practice with partners, read and write whole numbers through the hundred-thousands place, and use expanded form and place value to explain the value of digits through the hundred-thousands place
  • Segment 3: demonstrate their understanding of place value by playing a game to solve for mystery numbers using clues and complete an exit slip to help you determine next instructional steps

These lessons can be taught over the span of a half day or you can use the lessons independently, broken up over several days.
