Helping our students solidify their understanding of decimal value requires multiple opportunities to practice and explain their thinking with peers. This lesson provides multiple opportunities for your students to practice key vocabulary and discuss the “why” with partners. Your 5th graders will:
- Collaborate and use the “language” of place value and decimals in strategic, purposeful note-taking partnerships in order to read and write decimals to the thousandths place in word and expanded form and base-ten numerals
- Explain the “why” of place value by reading and writing decimals through the thousandths place correctly with partners in order to compare two decimals or fractions to the thousandths place
- Complete an exit slip to help determine your next instructional steps
