Perfect for multilingual students learning English, this series of lessons includes strategic scaffolding with sentence frames for building vocabulary through collaborative conversations. Using an informational text: “Breaker Boys: A Light at the End of the Tunnel” by Jennifer Kaul your students will:
- Segment 1: Work with partners and academic sentence frames to take a literal interpretation of informational text to evaluation and synthesis using text evidence questions
- Segment 2: Collaborate with their peers to document the effects of the job on the Breaker Boys
- Segment 3: Demonstrate the main idea by creating headings for the informational text
Segment 4: Create a crossword puzzle that demonstrates an understanding of the informational text
These lessons can be taught over the span of a half day or you can use the lessons independently, broken up over several days.
