Actively engaging your students in a close reading lesson for poetry can be challenging! In this 1 hour lesson your students use strategic engagement protocols in order to make meaning and understand the complicated “poem” that is our national anthem. Your students will
- Participate in a series of engaging close reading lessons with many opportunities to develop vocabulary through oral language practice
- Use context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words
- Ask and answer text dependent questions in order synthesize, summarize and infer the purpose of the poem
- Discover the ways poets use author’s craft and text organization to support understanding
