Lesson Plan Description
Finding the key details in order to determine the main idea is one of the most difficult reading skills to teach (and learn). In this interactive close read of the historical poem, “Star Spangled Banner,” by Francis Scott Key, your students will:
- Participate in a series of engaging close reading lessons with many opportunities to develop vocabulary through oral language practice
- Use context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words
- Ask and answer text dependent questions in order synthesize, summarize and infer
- Write a 3-5 sentence summary of the poem in order to capture the main idea
