• Collaborate with peers and practice the "language" of measurement, take math "notes" in order to review or investigate for the 1st time ways to measure and create rulers to use that identify measurement lengths in whole, half, and quarter inches
• Gather, apply and record "real-life" measurement data
• Create a line plot with a horizontal scale marked off in whole number, half, or quarter units and gather measurement data from their peers
• Complete exit slips to guide next instructional steps

 

Materials Needed:

• blank paper
• Pencils
• Blue, orange, and red crayons, colored pencils, or markers
• Objects found around the room for students to measure
• Box of crayons
• Document camera or whiteboard, gathered data OR data sample sheet

Printable Resources:

• “Exit Slips” (as an optional assessment component) (1 copy per student)
• “Student Rulers” (needed if students don’t have access to real rulers)
• “Sample Data Sheet” (1 half sheet per student if you are not using data collect from segment 2)
• “Ms. Smith’s Class Height Data” (1 half sheet per student –or- project for students to copy)
