Lesson Plan Description
Measurement is a fun and engaging skill to teach with 3rd graders. Use these lessons as an introduction or reinforcement for understanding and practicing this real-life skill. Your students will:
- Segment 1: collaborate with peers and practice the “language” of measurement, take math “notes” in order to review or investigate for the 1st time ways to measure and create rulers to use that identify measurement lengths in whole, half, and quarter inches
- Segment 2: gather, apply and record “real-life” measurement data
- Segment 3: create a line plot with a horizontal scale marked off in whole number, half, or quarter units and gather measurement data from their peers and complete exit slips to guide next instructional steps
These lessons can be taught over the span of a half day or you can use the lessons independently, broken up over several days.
